Bartolomeo Schirone has more than three decades of experience teaching disciplines related to reforestation and forest restoration in Italy. The article discusses the importance and current trend of reforestation, particularly in light of the new Consolidated Law on Forests and Forestry (TUFF). It is pointed out that people often do not have a clear perception of what an acre of land means and the number of trees it can contain.
While in nature the number of trees per hectare varies greatly depending on multiple factors, in reforestation projects there is a tendency to follow set patterns, with an average density of 1,000 trees per hectare. The article mentions several initiatives by companies and organizations that have engaged in reforestation projects, including Tiesse, Bestway, and the ambitious project between SNAM and CDP. It is stressed that despite the commendable efforts of these organizations, nature alone, if left undisturbed, is capable of regenerating forest areas significantly.
The AlberItalia Committee aims to plant 60 million trees to counter the climate crisis and promote the connection between people and trees. Although these efforts are valuable and worthy of praise, the author points out that such initiatives represent only a fraction of what nature can do on its own. He concludes by emphasizing that while reforestation is crucial, it is equally important to allow nature to do what it does best: spontaneously regenerate itself.
